So, AI works predominantly by neural networks, sets of nodes that interact with each other to give positive or negative rewards. Our brain creates pleasure through positive rewards and pain through negative rewards. Since neural networks are modeled by our brain I'm sure pain for robots would be similar to bombarding them with negative rewards.
