Well, I would have to say that yes, it is ethical to stop progress, and I will be hated for saying this, but saying that it is unethical to stop progress, it is equally unethical to stop slavery, just think about it. The only difference between AI and slaves is that one is human, while the other is not, but eventually the difference will be menial, so yeah. Sorry for the controversialness of the comment, but I just wanted to throw my two cents onto the table.
