Man is too vain and petty to accept rights for robots or any other intelligent species in the universe. Too many people are too stuck up and small minded to accept that humans are not the superior race. If aliens ever arrive here or machines get advanced AI and emotions that resemble mans, you can be damn sure there will be extremists anti alien/robot terrorists, people forming hate groups and justifying it as the right thing to do and you know religion is gonna play a big role in calling them devils, demons, monsters etc in an attempt to dehumanize them to rally people into a mob mentality.
