Interesting reading the other opinions here. I’ve gone the EM role before when faced with a similar situation. I noticed quickly how deteriorated my fellow EMs/directors technical knowledge was. I left and went back to the tech lead path. For me, the main thought that helped make this decision 3 years ago was asking myself “If I left, and joined a new org without my current deep understanding of the tech stack/product, would I enjoy and succeed being just a manger?”. Today, I’d also ask, “If AI continues to drive change in this industry, and in 2 years Dev/Engineering work looks completely different then where I left it, will I be able to pick it up again?” Another observation I’d make is that it feels like EMs and middle management have been major targets for layoffs since 2023. But, that’s subjective.
