There are a few causes of fear talk. Developers may do it to show that they take the concern seriously, safety people to promote a need for their services, media to sell ads or books, etc. Some people have severe paranoia issues. We can also consider that other countries can not be trusted to stop development which is similar to the nuclear bomb problem. The real current danger is low. LLMs are causing minor problems with people who are already struggling with their own personal issues. But they also hold some promise of increasing efficiency and making knowledge more accessible. Most of the fear mongering is from irrational people or people who have something to gain.
