I worked at a corporate job and developed a niche and in demand area of expertise. I asked for a commensurate pay increase and was declined. They gave all the nonsense reasons for holding me back like they didn’t know if my performance was sustainable and would have longevity, I hadn’t been kicking ass for long enough. They minimized my accomplishments and my importance to the client. This was quite awhile ago, so ballpark I was making 65K and wanting to make 80K. I went to a startup consulting firm in the niche space and was offered 90K. Big corporation got my resignation and countered with 80K. They could have given it to me the whole time. I went to the startup and the client contracted with the startup to bring me back on the project and my first day back, the client gave me the desk of the guy who turned me down for the pay raise. I didn’t understand negging until years later watching Ehrlich explain it on Silicon Valley and suddenly my whole life made sense and that I had been conditioned since childhood to react feedback like “this is fine,” by putting my nose more firmly against the grindstone while wrecking my wellbeing trying to earn that pat on the head. Negging in a corporate setting is especially effective imho on people from marginalized groups. The mirage of earning advancement can save companies two or three FTEs worth of costs for each person they give just enough breadcrumbs to that they just keep grinding harder.
