That's a regulation problem not an AI problem. I work in the data center industry for a major cloud company. And while I'm not privy to the exact numbers, the datacenters themselves break even in about a year after being built out. They absolutely could build them alongside renewable energy projects to add the amount of energy they use directly back into the grid, or even directly power them with solar/wind plus storage. But the issue is they have no incentive to, and neither do the companies that they're competing with. They simply don't want to bother justifying having large solar farms on their balance sheet. Technology in general, and renewable energy in particular consistently gets cheaper the more it is built. Renewables are growing quickly even despite the president, but the hyperscalers could be funding a renewable transformation in this country but instead we are fighting solar and wind.
