it's actually the only comment so far that gets to the heart of the issue! assuming you think curing cancer is good, and curing cancer sooner rather than later is important, *and* that we have a fairly plausible path to get there by throwing massive amounts of compute at the problem -- then as a society we need to be deferring consumption and investing in building compute. the most straightforward way to do that is by having compute demonstrate value by automating what it can *right now*, so that capital gets allocated to buying more compute. and that happens to be a lot of white-collar jobs.
