This is interesting, because I understand what you're getting at - if you're an AI company that becomes very wealthy on the basis of eliminating jobs, but then the elimination of jobs leads to the demise of modern society, what's the point?
I think there's a couple of angles:
**Some of these tech CEOs are sociopaths**
And I know some people will take offense to this, but I'm putting this one first. These guys fundamentally don't care if millions of people are left without jobs, if the problems with their technology leads to millions of deaths, etc. They only care about becoming as wealthy, powerful and important as they can. It's why Elon Musk got involved with Doge, it is why Palantir is putting out manifestos that are utterly racist, it'sn why none of these guys seem to have any real moral compass: they just care about becoming as powerful as possible.
All of them have enough money not only to live the rest of their lives in complete freedom free from any reasonable restriction to their quality of life - but to have their kids and their kids' kids, and their kids' kids' kids to do so as well. It's not about money, it's about becoming a level of powerful that small nations aspire to be.
**I think a lot of these tech people think that if society collapses, they will be somehow immune from it**
Which, you know, there's a lot of history to point at that will tell you that before or after societies collapse, people tend to do something about it. Normally revolutions where these type of people end up not faring so well.
I was raised in an upper middle class in a third world country, and one of the things that I always try to educate people on is that being well off in a shitty country gives you about the same quality of life as being squarely middle class in a developed country. And that's largely because you don't have to be as concerned about petty/violent crime, partly because you just have access to a lot more stuff, and partly because having to live in a so
