Those are not fully autonomous drones of the type that the DOD^* is investing in. They are "fully autonomous" in that they can run a program with some parameter sensitivity, but humans are making extremely detailed decisions about their path. DOD already has this capability. The enhanced investment isn't just about "more drones" of that sort. They're very clear that they want "AI drone warfare", which is terrifying. I get that it's motivated in part by deploying a fighting force with less risk to soldiers, but the other motivations and the easily-foreseeable side effects (like "soldiers" that will not use actual moral judgement to decide not to fire on civilians, for example) should be giving everyone pause. ^(* it is still, legally, the Department of Defense. Calling it the other thing effectively supports war-mongering propaganda.)
