I enjoyed it in a way too, but I think that's because we weren't aware of where it was all headed. The internet was way more decentralized. I had 'communities' that I still think about to this day that no longer exist. Communities where people would write together, read each others' work, judge it. There were games based around it. We'd talk on AIM outside of that message board to plan stories. There were weird, stupid websites like homestarrunner that was like a multimedia mix between TV and games. Throughout all of this, the whole point was connecting with people. Reddit is still a form of that, but even here is getting overrun by bots. I get fooled way more than I used to. And it's all being bought out by the same few people. Aside from all of that, AI only makes people more reliant on AI. The fact that it's unregulated to me is just a huge concern. Unregulated AI is still just a handful of corporations controlling the way this thing behaves to people. Unregulated Youtube meant my songs got heard by tens of thousands of people without me having to pay a dime, because the algorithms still showed it to people without trying to grind every cent it could out of me (spoiler alert, like 40 people listen to my songs now lol). I wish I was as optimistic about it, but I don't see it as a parallel at all. Just because AI is a new thing doesn't undo all of the optimizing these tech giants have done by harvesting all of our data. It's still riding on the back of the our experiment, and its exponential progress will be nothing like social media - it'll make that progress look slow.
