I think the premise in the OP is actually also wrong. I would guess that UBI alongside/in preparation for/after AI is the plan for financial/tech giants and their political retainers. I don’t think they want to kill everyone off or leave everyone to suffer in some absurd way. I think they just want to make sure that we’re all sucking from the teat as long and as hard as possible. That is to say, the move toward leasing instead of ownership, the move toward automation instead of work, and the move toward guaranteed income that puts everyone at a sort of working class level of consumption is all about the capitalist class creating/maintaining an income and power dependency among the rest of us. They want to remain rich. They want to remain powerful. They want to maintain influence. They just want to remove as many variables (like human capital) as possible. So, they are happy to compete over where individuals use their UBI money to subscribe to any number of automated services the capitalists run. On the ground it may well lead to a higher quality of life for those of us who aren’t in the capitalist class. I’m open to that possibility. But it will also bring with it a radical redefinition of the values that we consider most vital in the developed world.
