I work in AI and this fearmongering is in my opinion the expected result of what happens when we treat corporate claims as fact and self-proclaimed AI leaders as truthtellers, without any external accountability. This isn’t a “story,” it’s a corporate narrative engineered by a high-level executive about one business’ public-facing hiring strategy (which is informed by many considerations, mostly economic ones). “We are embracing AI” is a much better narrative than “we are struggling financially and laying people off.” Unfortunately, unbiased tech journalism is not as powerful, trusted or nearly as prolific as it was in the dot com boom. Corporate press releases are still not journalism, and we shouldn’t treat media press releases and keynotes as fact. They are trying to sell a product to investors and to all of you. This is not about their tech. It’s about their bottom line. They want workers to feel scared and unmoored. They want you to feel desperate, because desperate people cost less money and are easier to control. This is purely about what is best for them financially. That fact should be the main takeaway.
