While true, the only thing AI did with regard to deepfakes was make it much easier and faster for the general public to create fake explicit images of people. Digital editing in the right hands has been able to create "deepfakes" long before AI was in every other news article. Make it illegal to create and distribute explicit digital imagery without consent from the person depicted and you would've cut this problem off before deepfake AI became the issue it is today. Granted that this wouldn't have *stopped* it, but there would've already been laws in place is the point.
