Yeah people treat “the law” as though it’s some all-encompassing thing that serves to smack down any person that you believe is acting in an immoral way. AI companies DO have to follow the law. It’s just that the law is actual words, written down, detailing what is and isn’t prohibited, and it was not written to take into account massive companies scraping the internet in order to feed data to LLMs. And even then, the reason we have lawyers and judges is because it turns out that it’s frequently not easy to determine if/how those laws apply to behaviors that weren’t considered at the time of writing.
