The whole thing cuts but 'this course is not meant to be a surveillance exercise' is what put me on the teachers side. Like yeah there's probably an appeals process, etc etc, but realistically this teachers degree is not meant to be put to use screening AI. And a disproportionate amount of weight goes on the teachers plagiarism submission, which also isn't fair to them. I had a friend in undergrad who I absolutely believed would be absolved from a plagiarism case from their teammate using their material to abet a different student. Still found guilty, got an F. Academic affairs and plagiarism committees (which once again, are typically just other professors) were already behind the times before ChatGPT changed everything in 2022. At some point it would just be every professor meeting some factorial number of times to regrade each other's courses, which is insanity and not their purpose.
