The tech companies invested in the AI economy would be hit very heavily. Credit would probably evaporate, tearing down the Growth companies.
100% Retirement plans would implode. Just checked my full holdings list of my 401k today. About 30% of the Large cap was the top 10 tech companies. Growth in Large cap was nearly 65%. Large Cap was 50%. Nvidia itself is about 7% of all three. My company invests with Fidelity. Go check your prospectus folks. People exposed to this risk are going to simply evaporate.
Personally, I am a very negatively biased individual, so I would probably say the political fallout will simply be irrecoverable. The US already is struggling with Rule of Law concerns now. If people lose huge portions of their retirement and we enter a recession, I don’t see Americans getting suddenly level headed.
The tech itself may persist, but by no means is it guaranteed. Running LLMs available for public use requires the maintenance of very expensive infrastructure. At the moment, there does not appear to be a revenue model for doing this, and so mostly this is done off credit, but at HUGE expense. And in a downturn, people will lose faith in the technology, and credit will dry up. If the remaining revenues cannot cover infrastructure costs, which I have a hunch is the case, all the publicly available LLMs could be gone very fast.
What would remain would be underground tools being researched by private industry and universities. Eventually costs would reduce and the tech would return, but even after that happens, it will take some time to figure out a way to slot it back into modern work flows in a way that is cost effective and meaningfully increases productivity.
