From my rather jaundiced perspective, the actual goal of a lot of AI initiatives is less to achieve any particular thing than it is to be seen to be using the New Hotness, allowing senior managers to be seen associated with said New Hotness. As long as the subsequent failure isn't sufficiently spectacular to end up on the front page (at least not in a way that directly tars the manager in question), the project has achieved its aim.
