I liken this conversation to the debate around self checkout machines replacing cashiers. For my credentials, I am someone who has lived, breathed, and worked IT since my junior year of High School. I'm coming up on 20 years in IT next year. I have worked every role from frontline phone fodder to engineering support roles. My current (and favorite) role is that of a field engineer. I worked over 5 years doing support on POS systems at major retailers (Target, Kroger, Walgreens, etc) and specifically on the self checkouts at most of those. The basic debate around self checkouts vs cashiers amounts to the idea that it is a better profit margin for the companies, at the expense of customer satisfaction. Also, there is a larger concern about it replacing cashiers, resulting in lower employment overall for each store. This is basically the same idea with AI. Based on what has happened with self checkouts, I think we are safe from AI, at least in the long term. Why do I say that? Self checkouts were the solution to a bottleneck. Customers had to wait for a human cashier to check them out. People like to chat, cashiers have bad days, there are a flood of customers or a run on a product, it's Black Friday and there are fights over the Tickle Me Elmos, etc. Managers don't ever want to run the register; that's for the poor people. So, thanks to lean staffing mandates, customers queue up, wait in long lines, get angry, and Corporate just sends them a gift card to soothe them. Here comes the technology of the future(tm)! Self checkouts make the customers to the work themselves! Now, if it takes forever, they only have themselves to blame. No more gift cards! Less employees on payroll! Well, that's not how it worked out. For every cashier laid off, the stores had to hire at least 1 of the following: a self checkout attendant, a loss prevention officer, a stocker to handle the additional throughput, or a technician (remote and/or field) to fix the inevitable issues.
