It is pure speculation To add some context, I think the release was partially a run for market share and to reduce overhead. First, they made GPT5 open to the public, and on the web GUI hid all the other models (o1, GPT4. ect). Why do you think they did this? Second, they forced the web version it to have two modes "light thinking" and "heavy thinking" with no way to turn it off. This is probably to aid in server overhead as no doubt they are losing money running it for non paying customers.
