Unfortunately, AI is now a deterrent more than anything else. Even if private enterprise dropped out of AI completely, you’d still have governments worldwide pursuing AI for warfare. It’s already playing out with target recognition and drones today. And there are practical, beneficial to humanity use cases for AI. AI has improved oncology tremendously by helping doctors discover cancer in a patient faster. My mom was in the hospital recently, and an AI camera watched her neighbor. She was an old woman with dementia, and the AI recognized when she was trying to pull life support off her body. A nursing team was notified and stepped in. This is a way better use of a nurse’s time than standing watch 24/7. So in short, we’re going to pursue it until it comes close to killing us all. We did that with nuclear weapons. We did it with the ozone layer. We will hopefully do it for all of climate change eventually.
