I used to be exactly like you, saying AI is not more than a stochastic parrot, a tool that uses statistics to determine what to say or how to react. Basically this thing on yout iPhone keyboard that predicts the word you are typing but with way more training data and computing power. But then I heard someone smarter than me with a PhD in Biology say, that basically all lifeforms are statistical learners. Got me thinking. Also that it is so damn hard to define „life“ and „conscience“. Dead Atoms make up molecules, they make up proteins, they make up parts of the cell, they form a cell, they form an organ, they form a human being. Where do you draw the line between dead atoms without conscience and a living conscious human being, at which a certain amount of cells becomes conscient ans at which point does a certain combination of dead atoms become „alive“?
