I mean lots of the outsourcing done is purely for the cost savings at the cost of skill. India has plenty of amazing engineers, but those engineers are actually getting their money's worth and companies won't be saving by going with them as much as the other picks. The cheaper ones that are tantalizing to companies consist of higher amounts of self-taught and bootcamp coders. They are incentivized to focus on passing the interview rather than long-term transferable skills. I'm sure some of them are good enough for the position, but that isn't always the case. With AI and vibe coding, it's never been easier for mediocre developers to pose as a higher skilled one, especially when you only work remotely. Once the companies start to smell the shit pilings of AI generated code as it starts to cost them in maintenance, we might see a recovery. Until then, just be irreplaceable.
