As others note, some of it could be pretext to lay people off and make investors happy at the expense of long term investments. There might be some actual productivity gains but not nearly at the level of the hype. AI is not writing the bulk of code….yet… and still requires substantial supervision. In many cases it spits out garbage. There are legal consequences too to consider. But nonetheless many companies are not hiring and are in fact laying off … Some of it is probably companies reluctant to make long term investments in employees when they think an AI productivity breakthrough might be right around the corner. And there is also offshoring too, which is back with a vengeance after the pandemic proved that work can be done from anywhere. So, the combination of offshoring and speculation about AI productivity has contributed to the lack of tech hiring (and layoffs) in recent years. As well as correcting for over expansion during the pandemic, and also peer pressure to do cost cutting while it’s in vogue to please shareholders …
