I am a software engineer who researched AI in order to incorporate it in my company. Truth is, AI is really good as an assistant but it is not good as a productive worker. The only "replacement" that will happen is people will use AI over google in their day to day and the people who are replaced are those who cannot adapt. Depending on the sector you work in (I am B2B in finance), its even harder to implement AI because business is all about consistency and AI is way too new to trust with things like money. Companies to this day use things like internet explorer (now edge) and ask that any product they receive is supported by that browser. Point is companies are resistant to change and AI is way too big of a shift. Another criticism is creativity. Specifically with replacing junior developers, you really cannot, AI is not creative, it just implements human creativity and the work it produces needs to be triple checked which basically winds up eating up more resources than a junior developer. What I personally see happening is AI being used to train junior developers by being a sort of documentation manager, that way senior developers have their hands less tied with helping juniors and juniors can still be brought up to speed.
