You do have to define these fundamental building blocks of existence, since most people never ever have to. I don't blame anyone for being confused and using different language. Like, what is "consciousness" to you? I like using the word "qualia" because I think it's more concrete. It's not just that you process information (like that the wavelight corresponding to green is coming from a plant), but an experience of "greenness" being evoked when you process the signs wavelengths corresponding to green. When you see that a plant is green, you don't just know it, you experience it within your model of your sensory information. We dont know why we possess qualia, or how to even describe it. That's why this kind of stuff, even abortion, is such a debated topic (or hot topic at least). We don't really have the tools to prove it one way or the other. I'll say that I don't think ChatGPT has qualia. Maybe it does though, and qualia has more to do with arising inside complex information systems rather than concrete brain structures that ChatGPT lacks. I think it's important to recognize how ChatGPT is similar, and different to us, and what that says about us.
