And now that the West is going to enter into an AI competition with China, we'll see even more pressure to see who can develop their AI faster. This will be analogous to the way WWII stimulated aircraft development, or the way the Space Race pushed the development of missile technology. The difference is that AI development will result in exponential advancement. Good or bad? That's not a very useful model and we'd do better to think in terms of Order vs Change instead. Imo, AI is an incredibly powerful agent of Change. So the paradox here is that the people most interested in developing AI seem to be doing so with the goal of maintaining/strengthening the existing Order. But the most likely outcome is some kind of unanticipated and disruptive Change.
