Brief summary of a lot of history: South Korea didn’t really get rid of the monarchy and nobility (literal noble families in a Korean style feudalism) when they modernized. Post Korean War (what led to modern day South Korea and North Korea), the old nobility runs the biggest companies in the country. These companies were given a lot of unchecked power to rebuild and modernize South Korea with help from Western Powers. These companies are basically the modern nobility. Example would be Samsung. There’s a lot of pressure in the country to get a job at these companies because of that power. Children grow up and are educated towards a job in those companies at times. This is a gross oversimplification but that’s the gust of it.
