I have my suspicions that Microsoft goaded or bribed the board to do it.   The other major tech firms all got caught by surprise in early 2023 by openAI and scrambled like mad to get their own AI efforts going. Microsoft loves to remind people that they invested in openAI... But they don't control it. They don't even own the shares in the portion that makes decisions. And they're generally incompetent at making anything. MS has historically bought its innovation. Their efforts in AI research have had some laughably bad results.  So if they had managed to shatter and fracture the company, they'd be there to pick up the pieces.  The Linux nerds remember Microsoft's clandestine efforts against them. This might simply be more of their old ways surfacing.  It'll be telling as to where Daniel Kokotajlo, William Saunders, Krueger, Ilya Sutskever, and Jan Leike go find work after leaving OpenAI. It's not like they're dead or will stop being AI researchers and workers.
