The two striking Hollywood unions were able to reach an agreement because they were negotiating against an oligopoly (the Hollywood studios, plus a few large independents). In particular, the interests of the studios and the actors and writers were aligned to some extent over the use of generative AI. The studios must be afraid of having to compete against a flood of cheap AI-generated content, of steadily increasing quality, in the coming years. But AI entertainment content has a marketing disadvantage, because it lacks real human actors, writers, and cinematographers that members of the audience can talk and gossip about. By entering into the legal agreement with SAG-AFTRA and WGA, the studios can assure their audiences that they are not wasting their time watching AI fakery, at least most of the time (disclaimer: I don't know the details of the strike resolution). Other knowledge-based industries are typically not oligopolies, so it's not clear that labor will be able to replicate the success of the Hollywood unions.
