It is entirely possible that "consciousness" is just a neural net (or similar equation) that takes as explanatory variables inputs from the five senses, and the output variable is a cognitive state, where certain cognitive states result in a physical action. If so, then GPT is not conscious, but it is absolutely an important stepping stone on the path to AI. Personally, I think it is slightly more complicated than what I described above. I think the output variable (cognitive state), is also an explanatory variable, so that the system of equations has an element of recursion. But I'm a fan of Hofstadter's GEB, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.
