The problem is people think AI implies sentience, and it does not. AI is quite a broad field that covers many types of algorithms. ChatGPT is objectively an AI. A Chess Engine is an AI. So is a massive chain of if-else blocks. Look up expert machines, logic solvers, markov chains, support vector machines, and then finally neural networks. You'd cover all of these in a college ML and/or AI course. They're all ways to embed a portion of human intelligence into machine algorithms. That's what the field of artificial intelligence is. This whole contention about what is and isn't AI is likely referring to artificial general intelligence - AGI, and I can wholeheartedly agree we are nowhere close to achieving that based on any reasonable metric.
