That's just because the technology has been democratised: it's now in the hands of the common coder, and we're all hustling for a paycheck. There hasn't been a loss -- all the researchers using AI to solve cancer haven't gone away. The opposite.
The thing you're perceiving is the explosion of hobbyist projects, which have all kinds of goals, not just the high minded knowledge seeking or humanitarian goals that typically drive research.
