Openai is a capped-profit company. The profits for investors are capped…for future rounds the cap gets lower and lower..its pretty high for early investors though. That being said openai would have not been where it is today if it was to remain non profit..funding from microsoft and other investors was critical for its growth..also microsoft gave them unlimited azure access which would have costed tens of millions of dollars..chatgpt was trained on 10000 a100 nvidia gpus..each one of those gpus cost around 10k(openai probably got a better price though)…the next model will supposedly need 30k gpus…a non profit company cannot comeup with that kind of funding.
