I work for an automation company. I recently got an email saying that, thanks to our hard work, one of our clients was able to lay off 40 people, nearly half their staff. I was meant to be proud of this. I'm all for passing drudge work onto machines so humans can spend their time on interesting, meaningful, fulfilling things. To do that takes automation *and* social change. Without the latter, we're not lifting up low-wage laborers; we're just screwing them over. I'll cheer for the modern wave of AI and automation once if and when it actually starts helping more people than it hurts.
