For me, the fundamental difference that I perceive between humans and animals is that "I" am aware that "I" am aware while an animal seems to just be "aware" of stimuli in general.
Will an AI be aware that "it" is aware, and even if so, what is "it"?
Or, more daunting, will it be so far ahead of human consciousness that it spans a gulf between it and humans similar to the one I perceive to span between myself and a cat?
