I agree with you. I think this could be a really useful tool to open up the discussion on where consciousness (or mental states, the experience of qualia) comes from or how it arises to a wider audience and get people interested in this. We can argue over whether or not a theoretical future AI is, will, or can be conscious as much as we like but it will inevitably reduce to an argument over different theories of consciousness.
