Its a holdover from the mid 90s I think, when japan really did have really high suicide rates, close to double todays. Looking at the charts its still very high up in the list of highly developed nations, with only Belgium (pretty close to japan) and Korea (highest one) being higher. but the difference between Japan and other developed nations (Aside from Korea) is not that large, so the stereotype really needs to go :/
