And no, you don't need to try to aim for herd immunity by getting everyone infected at the same time. The Spanish flu took ~3 years. Overall, the issue isn't if herd immunity works or not. It can work but it doesn't matter. The issue lies in simply controlling the spreading. If a vaccine comes along, great! (even though it will take months and months to get it to most people) If not, going for herd immunity slowly is not a bad idea.
