How are people in a technology sub talking about a huge advancement in technology as some inherent evil? Facial recognition software will happen. It's too useful, and in time it will become a huge protection for people. Humans are flawed, we don't just see another ethnicity with a poor ability to distinguish between members, we are also prone to stereotypes. Machines hold none of the same baggage. Imagine a world where an innocent person will not be mistaken for a criminal, not arrested, not put on trial, nor convicted, all because we've removed the flawed officer's opinion that this person looks like someone on a grainy camera. Imagine a world where we don't have to carry ID and identity theft is nearly impossible. These will become powerful protections for citizens, and everyone looks at this as though it's necessarily evil. Here's what I know about technological advancement: if you don't use it, someone else will. Who are we relegating this tech to, and for what purpose? Once it leaves government control, that's it, it's in the wind. And the private sector will use and develop it without our consent outside of a single line in a 200 page license agreement. We won't have control, nor benefit from a wildly powerful tool to protect people more than it will harm them.
