One humungous point here is people's mental health, which is as imperative as physical wellbeing. By shutting society down completely and confining people into their homes for up to a month, any government would place the mental health of its citizens at risk. This could result in a far more damaging, long-term impact to society on all sorts of levels, including anti-social behaviour, law breaking and pressure on health services. Plus, we can develop vaccines to counteract physical ailments, yet understand so little of how our brains function as each person's mental illness is more individual than, say, a broken arm. All the economy-saving measures in the universe won't counteract the fallout of keeping people under house arrest, especially for those living alone or with no outdoor space. We need to maintain our humanity, compassion and caring for each other - they are the true lessons we're meant to learn from this pandemic. I don't envy any government of our current time - they are working insanely hard in extremely tough, ever-changing, landscapes. What we need to do is pull together and work with one another, on a collective level.
