Economy vs deaths is a false dichotomy also.
If you end the lockdown, things aren't just going to return to normal. Even if just the retirees and "at-risk" people stop going to restaurants, travelling etc, it will drive many businesses out of business... and then the flow-on effects will be felt.
Better a short, sharp pain for the economy than under-performance for years to come.
