I've heard the stories from my own parents of life in a Soviet controlled state, so I wanted to see it myself, and Cuba was exactly what they told me of their childhood. I mean, apart from cell phones without a cell network, forcing people to buy WiFi cards for use in small public hotspots. I certainly wouldn't call it hell on earth; the system is built so people can survive, but anybody that wants to do more than survive, or has any ambition either hustles the system, or leaves. There were quite a few brand new S class Mercedes, Ducatis and beautiful homes in New Havana, while the streets in old Havana were crumbling with people living with nothing more than a stained mattress in a delapitated building with no windows. That level of inequality certainly exists even in the US, but within walking distance and separated by a university, probably not.
