After traveling to Cuba a few years ago, I learned that most people work for the government, and they generally make the equivalent of $5 a month. That has increased somewhat recently, and they are provided things like food or medical treatment free of charge, but they were given rice and beans and very very little meat. While Cuba is doing better than a country like Jamaica, pretty great is a stretch.
