The autonomous vehicle industry as a whole is much less safe than the public perceives it to be.
Additionally, the safety benefits of autonomous vehicles are not going to be as great as the public perceives it to be. As exemplified in this case and with many Tesla owners, the end-user will "rise to the occasion" and negate this technology with human negligence (i.e. cell phone use, drunk driving, other cars on the road assuming the robot will yield, etc)
