One of the professors on my advising committee is fairly prominent in this field (AI for medical diagnostics, etc.) and, while I don't work on this myself, I've had the chance to listen to him talk about it on a few occasions. At this point in time it seems like a lot of the work in this field of research is to help provide more useful diagnosis information, as to doctors. So, instead of replacing doctors, or acting as a second opinion, the goal of many of these ML (/"AI") applications is to serve as a tool to help make the right diagnosis in the first place.
