I absolutely agree that they should ban facial recognition. It will be a scourge on society. But here's why that will never happen and why we will likely see our daily lives looking more like Minority Report.
It will start with "good" intentions. Let's take the rideshare era as an example. In China, there was a case recently where a driver was expelled from the platform for harassing a female passenger. He then took his father's information to sign up for another account and then he just drove the car posing as his father. He went on to rape and murder a female passenger. How do we prevent this? How do we make sure that the real driver is who they say they are? Facial recognition. All it takes is a smart phone that's equipped with the technology so when Didi (Chinese Uber) wants to verify that the driver is who they say they are, all they have to do is require periodic alerts to scan the driver's face at the beginning of a work shift and during the work shift.
This will all come under the guise of safety (only you can pick up your kid from day care!), keeping your identity secure (you don't want someone else using your credit card!) and national security (we need to know where the terrorists are!). And an argument could certainly be made to the validity of those points. But what it will do more than any of that is to create a behemoth machine for advertisers. No more clicking away at ads or looking away, ads will require screens to faces so that advertisers know that you are literally face to face with their product. Your activity and presence anywhere is going to be constantly monitored and people will say how it will deter crimes and lead to more solvable cases (which it will) but at the great cost of personal freedom from surveillance and being inundated with media, consumption and advertisers.
tldr; it's already happening in China, it's going to be a nightmare.
