TLDR of the science and where we're at in terms of change
Global average temperature change right now is in the low +1.0C range.
If we break *roughly* \+2C, [the Earth will begin warming itself](https://www.pnas.org/content/115/33/8252) through *"self-reinforcing feedbacks (that) could push the Earth System toward a planetary threshold that, if crossed, could prevent stabilization of the climate at intermediate temperature rises and cause continued warming on a “Hothouse Earth” pathway* ***even as human emissions are reduced***."
The UN suggested we only have until [2020](https://www.carbonbrief.org/only-three-years-save-1-5c-climate-target-says-unep) to stop emitting carbon before we are set up to break +1.5C, due to the delay on CO2's effect on the atmosphere (\~40yrs). So that ain't happening.
Another notable study says we may only have [10 years](https://www.pnas.org/content/115/52/13288) until we're set up to hit at least +3C in 2030 because of exponential change caused by the feedbacks. Even the American Petroleum Institute guessed we'd hit [\+2.5C in 2025](https://insideclimatenews.org/sites/default/files/documents/AQ-9%20Task%20Force%20Meeting%20%281980%29.pdf) back in 1980. On top of activating those warming feedbacks, climate change of this speed and intensity could mean the end of our global industrial civilisation: see [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bRcu-ysocX4) video for elliptical, historical evidence of how that may occur.
If you think that sounds crazy: remember that the US and the UK governments are **both** preparing for [\+4C by (aka BEFORE) 2100, at a \*bare minimum\*](https://www.reuters.com/article/us-britain-climatechange-floods/uk-urged-to-spend-1-billion-a-year-on-flood-defense-as-world-warms-idUSKCN1SF1EF). This is still a crisis, will mean [hundreds of millions dead over the century, hundreds of millions more made refugees from famine, drought, and storm-stricken areas](https://mymodernmet.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/cli
