No it's not fake news. But it's also one of those thing where the sound bite headline doesn't tell the whole story and the reality is actually a lot more complicated. There is more forest now but whether those new forests hold as much life, whether the trees are carbon dense old growth style trees, whether they are just farm plantation forests etc are separate issues. Also there is still considerable loss of biodiversity from the cutting down of rainforest. Plus it's possible that if you go back more than 30 years we find out we're at a net loss still as much of Europe's forests had already been cut down by then. So no not fake but the truth is not so simple.
