I think what happens with math is that teaching to simplistic tests motivates algorithmic instruction. Kids then develop anxiety over time trying to memorize more and more complex procedures that have little conceptual meaning. I tutor math, and people don't appeciate that algebraic expressions even represent numbers. It's also baffling that the meaningful properties of complex numbers aren't taught - such as multiplication multiplying vector lengths and adding angles. This is a shame because mathematics is the language of the Universe. It's like we're deafening people on purpose.
